Nearly every business will use a computer for some or all their tasks, which means most of us face computer issues at one point or another.
Here at Shropshire Computers, we’re always at the end of the phone when things go wrong. We’ll squash your computer woes so you can get on with your day.
Here’s a rundown of some of the most common computer issues and the quick fixes to sorting them, if you don’t have our expert team on board…
1. My computer has slowed right down
If your computer has got sluggish, instead of threatening to throw it out of the window, try some of these quick solutions…
Open the “Start” menu and search for “Disk Cleanup.” Run the tool and follow the prompts to clear unnecessary files.
And for the classic – try re-starting your computer! Once it’s up and running, only open the apps you need, and your computer will probably be much happier.
If that still doesn’t work you might need some support to look at upgrading your RAM and check for malware and viruses.
2. Slow internet
As much as businesses rely on their computers, they also rely on the internet, so it can be painful when the internet gets slow or can’t connect at all.
Sometimes it just needs a refresh so the first port of call is to unplug your router and modem from the power source. If you’re in an office with other people, make sure you let them know what you’re doing before unplugging!
Once it’s off, wait 30 seconds and then plug it back in again, giving it time to load back up. If the issue hasn’t improved, try getting in touch with your internet service provider.
3. My computer is freezing or crashing
It sounds like your computer has a weak link somewhere. If you’re on a PC try pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete and choose ‘Task Manager.’ End tasks for unresponsive programmes. On a Mac, it’s Command + Option + Escape, and ‘force quit’ anything that is unresponsive.
Update your computer by restarting it and install any pending updates.
4. I’ve got the blue screen of death
Don’t panic! You can always try restarting your computer. If the issue persists, then note down the error code on the blue screen and search online for solutions related to the error code.
5. Unresponsive programmes
When the software you want to use isn’t responding to your clicks and you’ve given it a minute to get itself together, then press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager (or Command + Option + Escape on a Mac). Find the unresponsive programme, right-click, and choose ‘End Task’ or ‘Force Quit.’
6. Losing an important file
No one likes that moment when you lose something important that you’ve been working on for ages. We’d always suggest having a solid backup plan in place and utilising cloud storage or external drives for backup.
First things first, check your ‘Recycle Bin’ or ‘Bin’ for accidentally deleted files, and perform a search using the file name to make sure it hasn’t mistakenly got dragged into the wrong folder.
You can use recovery software for accidentally deleted files, and data recovery services for more severe cases (although this is costly).
The easiest solution to all of these issues is to have an IT team you can call in when anything goes wrong – big or small! They can also make sure you’re protected against things going wrong, like viruses or losing data.
